Excellent. Good post. Let TfL know your views on the proposals and debate them here. Is Oval now the busiest junction for cyclists in London? Will CS5 help make it safer? And how will CS5 interact with proposals for the Vauxhall gyratory? The website says no impact, but it doesn't seem that way if you look at the proposals to widen the viaduct for the gyratory improvements: will that not impact on the CS5 cycle lane proposal in the same area?

Apologies, I missed the date of the next TfL drop in event: Church Hall, St Anne and All Saints Church, Miles Street, SW8 1RL Thursday 24 July 15:00-19:00I really recommend people attend, as they have very large wall displays. Each junction should be assessed in detail. Also, the quicker feedback is given to TfL, then the more time for ideas to assist can be assessed. I have been really impressed with all the TfL engineers on hand and their interest at the last event. The Oval (A3) is one of the busiest junction for pedal mode in the whole of London. Annual average daily flow PedalCycles for count point 36109 ( www.dft.gov.uk/traffic-counts/cp.php?la=Lambeth) recorded 8,800+ PedalCycle AADF for last 3 years. My review of this data suggests this Count Point was the highest in London in 2011, and was 2nd highest in 2012 and 2013 for PedalCycles. What is not so clear are the pedestrian desire lines and peak time pedestrian flows and where pedestrians tend to cluster to cross informally to access local parks or to local bus stops. I’ve suggested that the cycle super highway “shared space” cycle/pedestrian crossing by the Vauxhall Tavern has dynamic/manual control by operators peak time (assisted by CCTV). I see occasional very large group of pedestrians, and numbers of cyclists here (to/from Stockwell, and to/from Oval) and at these time the pedestrian/cycle green light phase of the crossing may need to be significantly increased to reduce the conflict and bottleneck that could otherwise impact egress on these pavement areas. Note, in the plans, TfL are proposing to open up a new tunnel under the viaduct. So, there would be separated routes for cyclists and pedestrians under the viaduct. General observation, is looking at installing more yellow box areas, so the risk of bus/car/coach getting caught in traffic and blocking one of the new cycle only (segregated) crossings is reduced at key junctions. And if a segregated cycle exit was blocked, consider what cyclists behaviour will be to go around such a blockage. On the A3 (Stockwell) I see 20-25 regularly waiting at red lights. Often 40. Factoring such scalability will be key to ensure both pedestrian and cycle modes are suitably and safely considered. And what happens if there is road/pavement works on a segregated tack. Would cyclists need to use main road? For this and other reasons, I suggest initially with the implementation, the existing ASL areas on the main roads are kept (and not removed as proposed), so drivers are not given the wrong impression the main roads are some kind of motor vehicle “only” space. One area needing to be checked with local interest is the new “Banned left turn from Clapham Road onto Harleyford Street (except for cyclists)”, and the potential impact to rat running locally on minor residential roads. So how does the Viaduct widening foreseen as part of the Vauxhall Gyratory changes impact on the CS5 proposal to use a second viaduct tunnel for cycling?

One to ask Tfl on Thursday.
My impression is that this cycle scheme through the viaduct is about doing something simple "now" (maximising benefits of limited infrastructure changes) that will connect CS5 on each side of Vauxhall. Then, as/when there are planned changes to the Vauxhall Gyratory etc, then the CS5 route can be adapted into these changes.

Is it true Lambeth Council that you have refused to allow circulated for public comments an option that has been developed to introduce two way working at the Vauxhall gyratory that would keep the bus station as it is current constructed?

Apologies, I am not sure of the question being asked or what may have been “refused”. I was at the today’s TfL event. Again, good number of TfL representatives there to answer questions. And again, good discussion on issues and potential ideas to assist local residents, pedestrians and cyclists.
Maybe kovf would like to propose an evening/event to meet up, and I can feedback on particular aspects of this CS5 proposal in more detail?

Hi 'Oval'
Not sure with whom I am speaking but just to let you know that KOVF did have a meeting (10th July) on the gyratory/bus station where we touched on CS5.
The question being asked is about the development of Vauxhall Gyratory. It appears that Lambeth Council has been given a plan (probably by TfL) that would permit traffic calming and two-way working AND retain the bus station (which many people want). However, Lambeth Council has, it seems, suppressed this plan and has not even informed the public that it exists (or is feasible) let alone circulate it for comment. We are seeking clarity and confirmation of what we have been led to understand and an explanation why Lambeth are suppressing this information.
Happy to meet and/or discuss. Our next public meeting is in mid-September. We are inviting TfL and Lambeth Council.
Regards
Malcolm Russell Chair KOVF
